Riding a motorcycle is much more dangerous than being in a car, but it can also be a lot of fun. Despite the shocking statistics, many people still love riding their motorcycles and do so daily or weekly. If you're a beginner motorcycle rider looking to get a bike, here are some helpful road safety tips you can use when out on your bike.

Pay attention to the road surface

Always keep an eye on the road surface when you're riding your motorcycle. When the road surface is uneven, or there is a patch of gravel, it can cause your bike to become unstable, which increases the risk of falling. White lines painted on the road can be more slippery than you think; move with caution over any new surface until you understand the impact on your motorcycle, grip and traction.

Be aware of your visibility

When riding your motorcycle, you’re far less likely to be seen by other drivers than in a car. Large SUVs may miss a motorcycle rider pulling out of a junction or in their blind spot. It’s a good idea never to assume that the driver has seen you until you’re entirely sure, and even then, be cautious. Many motorcycle accidents happen when cars don’t see people on bikes, keep that in mind and do as much as possible to increase your visibility on the road. This could include wearing a high-vis jacket or making sure other drivers can easily hear your bike.

Check the weather

Before you set off on your bike, look at the weather forecast; if you see the rain coming, consider another form of transportation. It can be challenging to ride a motorcycle in wet, windy and icy conditions, especially for a beginner rider. It can be even more challenging to drive when the rain first starts; the roads can become very slippery as the rain brings up oil and other substances on the road's surface. If you must drive in the rain, try and wait until it has had time to wash away the surface oil before setting off. Wear the right gear

The right motorcycle gear will protect you as much as possible in a fall or accident. Correct protective equipment could be the difference between walking away from a crash, ending up in a critical condition, or not surviving. A helmet is an absolute must at all times; protect your head with a high-quality helmet that fits correctly, and never leave home without your helmet. Motorcycle jackets with armor are also valuable protection; the armor can protect your chest, elbows and shoulders from impact, depending on the number of pads and space for protective pads. The jacket can protect your skin from road rash and poor weather conditions. Not all motorcycle jackets are made equally, do your research and find a jacket that’s fitted with high-quality motorcycle armor that won’t overly restrict your movement. Always try on a motorcycle jacket and ensure it fits well; too much space or a jacket that’s too tight will be unsuitable for regular riding. Protective footwear and protective gloves are also recommended; feet and hands can quickly become crushed or trapped if you come off your bike. Boots specially designed for motorbike riding will also prevent burns from your bike's exhaust and can protect ankle joints from injury.

Ride within your skills

If you’re out on a ride with more experienced riders, you might feel the need or pressure to push yourself to ride harder or faster. Developing your skills as a rider takes time, practice and patience, don’t expect to be weaving in and out of traffic on your first couple of rides. Start slowly and build up your confidence and skills over time; you will need to push yourself to gain new skills but do so in a controlled way. An advanced motorcycle riding course is a great way to learn new skills in a controlled environment. Try to avoid riding when you’re angry or distracted; this can result in pushing your abilities and a potential accident.
